Il Pino

Best place to catch rwy34 operation (used only with northen wind condition). You have an excellent view on planes landing on rwy34L, and you have best light in the morning, until 10 a.m. winter time or 12 a.m. during summer time. Depending on framing preferences, you may use long lenses for a perfect 3/4 front, or a 70mm or less for a side shot.

Tamoil

It is a fuel gas station along "via coccia di morto". From here you have a wide view on rwy 16R/34L movements. Ideal for rwy34L landings, when you can get a clear side shot of landing planes, or rwy16R takeoff, when you can get some nice shots of rotatin heavy planes. Mostly heavy departing from rwy 16R are Delta's 767, Cathay 747, Continental 767-400 and sometimes Alitalia's 777s.

 

 

Rovi

It's a raw grass field along via Coccia di Morto. From here you can have a nice view on rwy 34L landing airplanes. Useful only on "34 days", and only for landing planes. You may get some nice 3/4 front shots, since the airplanes are really close and low. Only for afternoon daylight.

 

Ponticello 16R

Excellent for rwy25 takeoff and rwy 16R landings. Fences will obastacle shots of ground movements traffics. After 10 a.m. it has perfect light condition to shot some rwy25 takeoff. Narrowbodies are yet too high to shot (unleast they had an intersection takeoff), but heavies are low and suitable to frame in with a 200mm. Its's even very good to catch rwy16R takeoff, even if should be better wait after 11a.m. to get the aircraft starboard enlighetd. You can also have some nice pictures throught the fence of plane landed on rwy16R while taxing to the terminal.

API

Other gas station along "via Coccia di Morto". It is placed on the roof of the bar. With an higher point of view, you can watch about 70% of Fiumicino moviments. It stand just in front of rwy16R, where you can spot all the landed airplanes while rolling out just straight in front of you. You have also a very nice overview of rwy 25, from wich you may see rotating planes taking off. You have the best light after 2 p.m. during winter time, and after 4 p.m. during summertime; take care of heat haze coming from the runway during hot days. Rotating planes from rwy25 have the best light after 6p.m. in summertime, since the rwy path is almost pointing west. This spotting place is also a good eating place; at the bar you may have some hot or cold drink and some nice sandwiches.

"Porchettara"

Is a small eating place at the end of Via Coccia di Morto. It's best know for his excellent sandwich more than a spotting point. From the road in front of this place you may get some throught the fence pictures of plane lining up on rwy 16R.

 

Boschetto 16R

A very good point if you like 3/4 front picture. It's a small downhill road in a wood, but you have a very good point of view of plane landing on 16R. Only usable in the afternoon since the sun will enlight the right side of the plane.

 

Canneto

It's almost the same of "boschetto 16R", but this time is best for early morning light since the enlight side of the plane will be the left one. You don't have much visibility on landing plane so it's best to have a radio or good hear! It's very good for early morning heavy rush hours!

 

Piazzoletta 16R

it's almost 30 meters away from "canneto", but this time on the road. You have a nice front view of the plane. Very nice if you want to feel having a b747 just 40 meters above your head. Only usable for spotting from the morning until noon time.

 

Sabbie

It's called "sabbie" ( sands) because it's a road almost covered totally by sand. Here you have the best overview on rwy 16R operation, but it's only good for photography on early morning lights. Here's another good place to whatch the early morning rush hour.

 

Angolo

It's a corner of airport perimeter where you can whatch rwy 25 holding point in front of you and rwy 16L and 16C on your left. Here you can get almost best pictures at Fiumicino airport. Best light to snap holding position scenes is from 3 p.m. in the winter or 6 p.m. during summer time. Front view are always backlight ( pointing south with the camera) so you have to wait until the airplanes enter the runway and make a 90° turn.

The view on 16L is perfect since plane are yet on taxiway Delta and slowly proceed to the terminal. Best light is always in the afternoon.

Rotate 25

It's a fence gate throught you may get a very quick and narrow view on departing plane from ryw25. Most of light/medium plane rotate at this exact position, but you need to be very quick to get the picture. You may also have a view on planes taxing to reach the holding position for rwy 25

Middle point 16L

Another gate situated almost at half of rwy 16L. It quite good to catch rwy 16C operations, but too far away to get landed plane on 16L even if they've already vacated the runway and taxing on Delta ( =rwy16C).

 

Rollout 16L

A spotting point along the fence running closer to taxiway D ( =rwy 16C) so you may catch al landed plane on 16L while taxing to the gate. Holes are a bit small so you may have some troubles while pointing at long planes (e.g. md80 or A321). A 150mm lens is more the sufficient to catch almost every type of planes

 

 

Oasi WWF

A WWF Oasis along the 16R approach path. You have a clear view of landing planes, and you can snap very good pictures on early morning light. Another good place to watch the early morning arrivals.

Touchdown 16L

Posto ad un cancello delle uscite di emergenza, si ha una buona vista sui momenti finali degli atterraggi su 16L. Non si è molto vicini alla linea di volo, e d'estate andare con focali lunghe crea parecchi problemi di calore dalle strisce d'asfalto che si incontrano sulla traiettoria. Essendo però un'uscita di emergenza, è preferibile non sostare a lungo e sopratutto non ostruire il passaggio di eventuali mezzi di soccorso.

Campo

Il posto principale di FCO, si ha un'eccellente punto di vista sugli atterraggi su 16L. Spostandosi all'interno del campo, si puo' andare da una 3/4 frontale destra fino a una perfetta laterale, nonché una 3/4 posteriore, sempre destra. La luce è buona dal primo pomeriggio fino al tramonto. Il campo è però proprietà privata, ed è quindi sconsigliato scendere nel campo se le culture sono in fase di crescita.

Luci 16L

Posto al termine del sentiero luminoso della 16L, si ha un'ottima vista perfettamente frontale sugli aerei in atterraggio e, ruotando l'inquadratura, si può seguire l'aereo fino alla toccata, anche se in questo caso la distanza diventa notevole. Per la vista sulla pista bisogna però considerare la presenza della rete perimetrale.

 

Testata 16L est

Burning rubber

Posto eccezionale se si vuole fotografare qualche fumoso touchdown sulla 16L. Nonostante la monotonia del traffico, è comunque l'ideale per fare foto creative e sempre diverse (due aerei non atterrano mai allo stesso modo). Ci sono due postazioni in questo spotting places. Il primo è la stradina in terra parallela la pista. La postazione è rialzata rispetto alla pista, ma data la distanza spesso si richia di inquadrare un pezzettino di rete nella fotografia. Il secondo è situato più in basso, ma richiede o il salire su un albero o una scala per oltrepassare la recinzione. Date le condizioni di luce, le foto migliori si fanno dal mattino preso fino a massimo le 13, quando il sole è a perpendicolo sugli assi piste 16. Con un 200mm si inquadrano perfettamente md80 e a321. Per eliminare la rete nella parte bassa delle inquadrature si può ricorrere alla tecnica del tempo lungo (panning) con obiettivi stabilizzati.

Terrazza Roma

Dal molo C si sale al secondo piano dove c'è "Terrazza Roma", un ristorante self-service tavola calda, con un'ottima vista sui piazzali, e in particolare sui parcheggi November e sui 2 Sierra ( la terrazza è praticamente sopra questi 2 parcheggi). Si possono osservare con molta tranquillità i movimenti ground e i decolli da rwy25. Si ha anche una discreta vista sui gate Bravo che sono posti a ovest del molo B.

 

Wiskhey parkings

It's situated along Via Francesco de Pinedo, between airport buildings. They're 3 small open point of view on 8-hundred ramp, giving you a nice sight on 842-to-847 stand. You don't have a whole view of parked plane, but you may alway try a nice nose closeup. Those are parkings for generic charter o some "not common" Alitalia flights
